Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada and raised in the United States. She's worked as a media critic since 1995. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency a website that includes videos and comments on the representation of women in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency explores how women are represented in pop culture. Destroying stereotypes about women are her main focus. But, she also discusses issues of specifically targeted harassment online against women and for other groups who have been left out. Sarkeesian is also a graduate of York University master's in social theological, philosophical and political thought. In addition to being a well-known public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO XOXO Conference and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Feminist Frequency was launched in 2009 by Sarkeesian. an undergraduate student at York University who had been fascinated by issues concerning gender and feminism since a long time. She was a young woman with a dream to develop an online series that would examine how gender is represented in video games. In the end, she ended up being victimized by online harassment. The attack did not stop her from pursuing the project, and instead it bolstered her resolve as feminist media critic. In recognition of the many achievements she's made for feminist movements, she has been recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a media journalist. She was also the director and founder of Feminist Frequency a nonprofit educational organization that explores pop culture depictions of women.
